There are two main reasons we present- to share information and to get people to act. We can position these two reasons at opposite ends of a continuum. We behave differently depending on the goal of our presentation. If we are purely informing (think reporting pure data), we may be presenting facts objectively without a lot of personal feeling or emotion.
If we are purely persuading (think sales pitch), we may be presenting content that is more subjective in nature with passion and conviction. The outcome may mean a lot to us personally. When you are purely informing, your audience is thinking about what you are saying. When you are persuading, your audience is reacting to what you are saying, your words are evoking feelings in them.
If you think about it, you will realize that you are rarely doing purely one or the other. There might be situations in which you purely inform, but usually, you also want your audience to do something with that information at the end of your presentation. The key is to think about your goal for the presentation and determine where you are on the continuum. This will help you to prepare your content correctly.
